Today is the Day

June 2nd, 2011

Infertility treatment can be emotionally difficult for patients. It is important to find ways to take care of yourself during treatment. Today is the day to make yourself a priority and do things that make you feel more balanced.

• Start the day with a healthy breakfast. Consider planning the other meals for your day so that you are more likely to continue making healthy food choices throughout the day.

• Schedule your day so that you have time to exercise and time to relax. Being active and being restful are both important ways for our body to cope with stress.

• Have conversations with people who make you feel good about yourself and your situation. Healthy, positive relationships are important in supporting people through difficult times.

• Try deep breathing or relaxation techniques before bedtime to help you sleep better. Make sure that your sleep environment is peaceful since sleep is a critical time for our body to restore its energy levels.

The Fertility Center offers counseling to help our patients explore ways to approach treatment in a healthy way. Counseling is available at no additional cost for patients at any point in their fertility journey. Feel free to call the Grand Rapids office and schedule an appointment.

Spring is in the Air!

March 24th, 2011

Spring is in the air!

After the cold of winter leaves, we look forward to warmth from the new season:  green grass, flowers blooming, and longer days.  At times, seasonal changes help us to feel renewed.  We may feel some fresh energy to face our life in a different way.

No matter where you are at in your fertility journey, you can embrace spring as a chance to make a small change that could have a big difference.  Pick just one change and see how it impacts your mood:

v     Clean/de-clutter the house

v     Get outside to exercise

v     Donate some un-used items from your home

v     Plan a trip

v     Volunteer your time

Patient Testimony-L.W.

March 10th, 2011
My husband and I have been on our fertility journey now since 2006 and have dreams of one day having a family of our own.  It has been a very difficult journey for us with many ups and downs along the way. In January of 2009 we had our 3rd medicated IUI in our hometown of Cleveland OH, and fortunately we did conceive twin boys.  We couldn’t have been more ecstatic! My husband is actually a triplet and his older brother and sister are twins, so we thought it was truly meant to be and we were going to carry on the tradition!!!

Unfortunately, five months later we went into pre-term labor and the doctors were unable to stop the contractions, which resulted in the loss of both of our precious little boys.  After some much needed time off, we started the fertility process again and did 3 more medicated IUI’s that were all unsuccessful.  At this point we knew that it was time to move on to the IVF process.  Paying for everything out of pocket has really been a strain, so we set out to find the best facility with the most affordable options. Coming from a city like Cleveland, which has excellent health care, but where at times you feel like you are only a number, can really get frustrating.

In my opinion, the last thing anyone needs when going through fertility issues is more frustration. We knew we needed to really do our homework on IVF and the facilities that offered it.  My husband came upon The Fertility Centers website and I sent a message to one of the nurses to get some more information.  I wasn’t sure if the fact that we lived out of state and yes, we are Buckeye fans, might cause some issues.  Little did I know at the time, that this is where we were meant to be!

We had our first appointment with Dr. Dodds and he totally put our hearts at ease.  Not only did he have the answers to our questions, but he was very easy to talk to and gave us great hope that we were going to be able to get pregnant again!!!  We left there that day really feeling positive and had our hope in fertility treatments restored. The staff and all the doctors were great.  The nurses were very helpful answering questions and calming fears as we started down this new road.  I was so used to always talking to an answering machine at other fertility clinics, but here there really are people that answer their phones and try to call you back in the same day.  It is amazing how different we felt being a patient here compared to the other fertility clinics we have used in our hometown.

This past November we went through our first successful IVF with The Fertility Center, which unfortunately took a turn for the worst after a few weeks. Our confidence and trust in the doctors and nurses here, gives us hope that our next step with The Fertility Center will ultimately bring us the baby that we have wished & prayed for everyday.  Even though we haven’t gotten our bundle of joy yet, both my husband and I would highly recommend The Fertility Center to anyone that is struggling to have a baby.
